SUMMARY:Buddhist - The Mahāyāna New Year
DESCRIPTION:The Mahāyāna New Year is different for each country and tradition. Some  Mahāyāna Buddhists celebrate it on December 31 or January 1 along with the rest of the world. Others wait for the first full moon which usually falls mid-January: in 2022 this is January 18th. Mahāyāna Buddhists will celebrate by honoring and praying to their gods\, particularly Buddha. Buddha’s statues will also be bathed as a show of respect. Religious songs are also offered to the deities. Buddhists are expected to visit a nearby temple on New Years Day. Once there\, they light candles to bring happiness and good luck for the coming year. \nMahayana Buddhism is the dominant faith of Northern and Eastern parts of Asia including China\, Korea\, Japan\, Mongolia and Tibet.  Mahāyāna Buddhism is more commonly practiced in Europe among immigrants from the countries where it is practiced. Among the key traditions include Zen\, Tiantai\, Korean Seon\, Chinese Chan\, Pure Land and Nichiren.

SUMMARY:Hindu and Sikh - Maghi
DESCRIPTION:Maghi is the regional name of the Hindu festival of Makar Sankranti celebrated in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. In Himachal\, the festival is also known as Maghi Saaji or Magha Ra Saza. In Bihar and Nepal it is also referred to as Maghi Parva or Maghi Sankranti. Maghi is celebrated on first day of the month of Magh of Hindu Calendar. It follows on the heels of the mid-winter festival of Lohri which is marked by bonfires in North Indian fields and yards. The next morning Hindus see as an auspicious occasion for ritual bathing in ponds and rivers. \nFor Sikhs it is a community gathering to commemorate martyrdom of forty Sikhs (Chalis Mukte) who once had deserted the tenth and last human Guru of Sikhism\, Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib\, but later rejoined the Guru and died while fighting the Mughal Empire army led by Wazir Khan in 1705. Sikhs make a pilgrimage to the site of the war\, and take a dip in the sacred water tanks of Muktsar. \nA fair (mela) is held at Muktsar Sahib every year and called the Mela Maghi is held in memory of the forty Sikh martyrs. Before this tradition started to commemorate the Sikh martyrs who gave their lives to protect the tenth Guru\, the festival was observed and mentioned by Guru Amar Das\, the third Guru of Sikhism.

SUMMARY:Christian - Baptism of the Lord Jesus
DESCRIPTION:The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord\, or Theophany\, is the feast day commemorating the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. Originally the baptism of Christ was celebrated on Epiphany\, which commemorates the coming of the Magi/Three Kings/Three Wise Men\, the baptism of Christ\, and the wedding at Cana. Over time in the West\, however\, the celebration of the baptism of the Lord came to be commemorated as a distinct feast from Epiphany. It is celebrated in the Catholic Church as well as the Anglican and Lutheran Churches on the first Sunday following The Epiphany.

SUMMARY:Orthodox Christian - Feast of the Nativity
DESCRIPTION:Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate their Christmas on January 7. They typically call this day the Feast of the Nativity. The reason Eastern churches celebrate the Feast of the Nativity on January 7\, is because they still follow the Julian calendar. There is a thirteen day gap between the Julian calendar and the Gregorian calendar\, which Western churches use. \nOn the Feast Day\, some observers cut a branch from a tree and bring it into their home. This symbolizes Jesus entering their home and hearts. People great each other with the traditional greeting of “Christ is born!”\, and respond\, “Glorify Him!” Then\, the bread present at the feast will be torn and shared with everyone. Some families have straw scattered at their table as a reminder of Jesus’ birth in the manger.

SUMMARY:Christian - Epiphany
DESCRIPTION:Epiphany\, also known as Theophany in Eastern Christian traditions\, is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ. \nIn Western Christianity\, the feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Three Kings or Three Wise men to the Christ Child. The feast of the Epiphany\, in some denominations\, also initiates the liturgical season of Epiphanytide. \nEastern Christians\, on the other hand\, commemorate the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River\, seen as his manifestation to the world as the Son of God.  \nThe traditional date for the feast is January 6. However\, since 1970\, the celebration is held in some countries on the Sunday after January 1. Those Eastern Churches which are still following the Julian calendar observe the feast on what\, according to the internationally used Gregorian calendar\, is January 19.

SUMMARY:Christian - Twelfth Night
DESCRIPTION:Twelfth Night (also known as Epiphany Eve) is a Christian festival on the last night of the Twelve Days of Christmas\, marking the coming of the Epiphany. Different traditions mark the date of Twelfth Night as either 5 January or 6 January\, depending on whether the counting begins on Christmas Day or 26 December. \nThe Church of England\, celebrates Twelfth Night on the 5th and refers to the night before Epiphany\, the day when the nativity story tells us that the wise men visited the infant Jesus. \n

SUMMARY:Christian Catholic - The Feast of the Circumcision of Christ
DESCRIPTION:The Feast of the Circumcision of Christ is a Christian celebration of the circumcision of Jesus in accordance with Jewish tradition\, eight days (according to the Semitic and southern European calculation of intervals of days) after his birth\, the occasion on which the child was formally given his name. \nThe circumcision of Jesus has traditionally been seen as the first time the blood of Christ was shed\, and thus the beginning of the process of the redemption of man\, and a demonstration that Christ was fully human\, and of his obedience to Biblical law. \nThe feast day appears on 1 January in the liturgical calendar of the Byzantine Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. In the General Roman Calendar\, the 1 January feast\, which from 1568 to 1960 was called “The Circumcision of the Lord and the Octave of the Nativity”\, is now named the Solemnity of Mary\, Mother of God\, and the Octave Day of the Nativity of the Lord. It is celebrated by some churches of the Anglican Communion and virtually all Lutheran churches. In these latter Western Christian denominations\, the Feast of the Naming and Circumcision of Jesus Christ marks the eighth day (octave day) of Christmastide. \n  \nPicture from the Menologion of Basil II

SUMMARY:Christian- Watchnight Service
DESCRIPTION:A watchnight service (also called Watchnight Mass) is a late-night Christian church service. In many different Christian traditions\, such as those of Moravians\, Baptists\, Methodists\, Anglicans and Pentecostals\, watchnight services are held late on NewYear’s Eve. This provides the opportunity for Christians to review the year that has passed and make confession\, and then prepare for the year ahead by praying and resolving.
