Freedom of religion and belief is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of democratic societies. Protecting and promoting this right requires continuous dialogue, cooperation, and international commitment.
In this spirit, a delegation from Religions for Peace International and Religions for Peace Europe met at the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) with Mr. Thomas Rachel, the Federal Government Commissioner for Freedom of Religion and Belief. The meeting provided an important opportunity to exchange views on current global challenges and future perspectives related to the protection and promotion of religious freedom.
The Religions for Peace delegation included Prof. Genti Kruja, President of Religions for Peace Europe; Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Naurath, President of Religions for Peace Germany; Mrs. Áine Beattie from Religions for Peace International, representing Dr. Francis Kuria, Secretary General of Religions for Peace International; and Mr. Peter Jörgensen.
During the discussion with Commissioner Thomas Rachel, participants addressed the global situation of religious freedom, the challenges faced by religious minorities in different parts of the world, and the importance of interreligious dialogue in fostering peaceful and inclusive societies. The conversation also highlighted the role of Germany and international partnerships in promoting and protecting freedom of religion and belief worldwide.
Participants emphasized that open dialogue between religious communities, governments, and civil society is essential for addressing discrimination, strengthening social cohesion, and promoting mutual understanding. Interreligious cooperation, diplomatic engagement, and civil society initiatives were recognized as key elements in safeguarding religious freedom globally.
The constructive exchange reaffirmed the shared commitment to promoting human dignity, protecting vulnerable communities, and strengthening international cooperation in support of freedom of religion and belief.
