At the invitation of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue a delegation composed of co-committee leaders and Board members of Religions for Peace Europe participated in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, held in the Vatican on October 28–29, 2025. The RfP Europe delegation was invited by Mons. George Jacob Card. Koovakad, Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Vatican, who addressed Prof. Genti Kruja, President of Religions for Peace Europe.
The Commemorative Gathering marking the 60th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, the historic document of the Second Vatican Council, took place on October 28 in Paul VI Hall. The event brought together international institutions dedicated to interreligious dialogue and religious leaders from around the world, representing diverse faith traditions. The celebration, attended by Pope Leo XIV, offered a moment of reflection on the vital role of interreligious dialogue in promoting peace and mutual understanding.
On October 29, the celebration continued with the General Audience at St. Peter’s Square, where representatives of RfP Europe joined religious leaders from across the globe. This gathering underscored the importance of interreligious dialogue and education as essential tools for addressing today’s global challenges.
In his address, Pope Leo XIV emphasized: “Sixty years ago, Nostra Aetate brought hope to ‘the world emerging from the Second World War.’ Today, we are called to restore that hope ‘in our world shattered by war and in our degraded natural environment. Let us work together, because if we stand united, all things are possible.’”
The Pope described Nostra Aetate as a “seed of hope for interreligious dialogue,” noting that this hope has grown to bear “rich fruits of understanding, friendship, cooperation, and peace.” He stressed that dialogue is not merely a tactical tool but a way of life – a journey of the heart that transforms everyone involved.
Referring to the Jubilee theme, “Walking Together in Hope”, Pope Leo XIV said: “We walk this journey not by compromising our beliefs, but by remaining true to our convictions. Authentic dialogue begins not with compromise, but with conviction—the deep roots of our own faith give us the strength to reach out to others with love.”
He further highlighted that the message of Nostra Aetate remains “highly relevant today,” reminding religious leaders of their responsibility to help people break free from prejudice, egoism, and hatred, fostering peace and love in the world.
The participation of RfP Europe highlights its ongoing commitment to building bridges of understanding and cooperation among different faiths, fostering peace, solidarity, and global fraternity.
