Religions for Peace Europe is pleased to announce that, following the call for applications for the position of Secretary General, the completion of the voting process on April 19, 2025, and the careful review of the results by the Election Commission, Ms. Maria Leppäkari has been elected as the new Secretary General of RfP Europe.
In a congratulatory message, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Genti Kruja, President of RfP Europe, extended his warmest congratulations and full confidence in Ms. Leppäkari’s leadership and commitment to the mission and values we uphold together.
Maria Leppäkari brings a wealth of experience to this role. Between 2015 and 2022, she served as Director of the Swedish Theological Institute (STI) in Jerusalem, where she facilitated religious and intercultural dialogue at both academic and grassroots levels. Throughout her career, she has built and maintained strong relationships with religious leaders in Jerusalem, the Nordic countries, Europe, and the Global South. She holds a Doctoral degree in Theology (2002) and the title of Docent (Adjunct Professor) in Study of Religions since 2012 at Åbo Akademi University, Finland.
Additionally, she was ordained as a Reverend in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land in 2019 and continues her ministry in both Jerusalem and Finland. Since 2022, Maria has been working in a leadership position in the Archipelago City of Pargas, Finland, advancing equity and promoting a just society in a political and civic context.
Maria is recognized for her high work ethics, integrity, and dedication to building a more inclusive world through dialogue and cooperation.
We are confident that, with her strong academic background, practical experience, and unwavering commitment, Maria Leppäkari will play a vital role in strengthening the impact and achievements of RfP Europe. We look forward to working closely with her during this important new chapter.
