Fireside Chat Explores Intergenerational and Interfaith Perspectives on Freedom of Religion or Belief

In celebration of World Interfaith Harmony Week, a United Nations initiative aimed at fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among people of different faiths, a Fireside Chat titled “Intergenerational and Interfaith Perspectives on Freedom of Religion or Belief” was held on February 4, 2025. The event brought together experts and advocates to explore the intersections of religious freedom with pressing global issues, emphasizing the role of interfaith dialogue in promoting human rights, peace, and coexistence.

The event was organized by Religions for Peace Global Interfaith Youth Network in collaboration with the European Interfaith Youth Network of Religions for Peace (EIYN), Religions for Peace Africa Interfaith Youth Network, and Religions for Peace Asia and Pacific Interfaith Youth Network.

The discussion featured four distinguished speakers who addressed key themes related to Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB):

  • FoRB and Gender: Viviana Osorio explored how religious and cultural norms impact gender equality and how the right to FoRB can be leveraged to advance gender justice.
  • FoRB and Climate Change: Rachel Forster highlighted the intersection between religious beliefs, environmental stewardship, and collective efforts to address the global climate crisis.
  • FoRB and Hate Speech: Hameeda Syed analyzed the role of religious freedom in combating hate speech and fostering a culture of respect and understanding.
  • FoRB and Interfaith Dialogue: Prof. Genti Kruja examined how interfaith collaboration can promote freedom of belief and contribute to sustainable peace and coexistence. He also presented the example of Albania, showcasing how interfaith dialogue fosters FoRB in the Albanian context.

The Fireside Chat provided a platform for intergenerational and cross-sectoral dialogue, reinforcing the importance of inclusive discussions in addressing contemporary challenges. Participants engaged in meaningful conversations, sharing diverse perspectives on how FoRB intersects with gender justice, climate action, countering hate speech, and fostering interfaith cooperation.

By bringing together voices from diverse backgrounds, the event embodied the spirit of World Interfaith Harmony Week, demonstrating how interfaith dialogue can be a powerful tool in advancing religious freedom and building a more just, inclusive, and sustainable future.
