The European Council of Religious Leaders held their annual meeting in Oslo 16-18 September 2024, generously hosted by the Church of Norway and the Muslim Dialogue Network.

During its days together, ECRL members considered the scale and pace of change in societies and communities across Europe, driven by globalisation, economic migration, conflict, the climate crisis, and new media and technologies, reflecting that societies and communities in Europe are faced with a magnitude and variety of challenges that have never been seen before. Members discussed the religious response to these challenges and opportunities for change. The ECRL have discerned a statement to be released shortly. [link to statement to be added]. Members’ discussions were informed by a presentation from Professor Sturla Stålsett: Toward a public policy of religion and belief based on commitment, plurality and equal treatment: Recent developments in Norway. And a presentation from Bishop Kari Mangrud Alvsvåg: Presentation of the Norwegian public inquiry: Joint efforts against extremism – better conditions for preventive work. ECRL members  also met with Bishop Rev. Dr Olav Tveit, the Praeses (presiding bishop) of the (Lutheran) Church of Norway.

Members enjoyed a dinner and evening program in the ICC Mosque in Oslo, where they were given a guided tour of the mosque and introduced to the situation of Muslims in Norway by Imam Senaid Kobilica. They also heard a presentation from Niels Fredrik Skarre from The Council for Religious and Life Stance Societies about how they are responding to challenges and opportunities for change through dialogue and coalitions between religious and life stance communities.

The Mayor of Norway held a reception for ECRL members and senior Norwegian leaders from The council of religious and life stance societies. Members were honoured to be received at the Oslo City Hall.

During the meeting ECRL elected its new President, Bishop Kari Mangrud Alvsvåg of Borg Diocese of the (Lutheran) Church of Norway – see press release.
